Robert Stevenson’s Thoughts on the Pursuit of Excellence

Hardheaded Humanism

by Robert Stevenson

I am a fan of L.S. Barksdale. He has been described by those who personally knew him as a man of superb intelligence, deep insight, and sincere compassion for his fellow human beings. Upon retiring after a very successful business career, he decided to become an expert in the field of self-esteem. His beliefs and writings were not wishful thinking, but more direct and to the point. One colleague described his writings as "hardheaded humanism."

I received this story from a dear friend and just had to share it with you. Charles Plumb was a US Navy jet pilot in Vietnam. After 75 combat missions, his plane was destroyed by a surface-to-air missile. Plumb ejected and parachuted into enemy hands. He was captured and spent 6 years in a communist Vietnamese prison. He survived the ordeal and now lectures on lessons learned from that experience!

I have a good friend who is an oral surgeon. One time we were talking about how he got so skilled at surgery, and he said that he started working on improving his non-dominant hand skills. He said that surgery requires two-hands, and his patients deserve to have a surgeon whose hands are “equally skilled.” So, he set out on the difficult journey to make his non-dominant hand to function just as efficiently as his dominant hand.

It Seemed That Time Stopped

Time never stops. Well, it seemingly did for me on February 24th at approximately 8:00 am. My wife called out, and I found her on the floor, writhing in pain. We had no clue what was going on, so we headed for the emergency room. Time seemed to stop. Nothing mattered except getting to the ER. Meetings would be missed, Zoom calls cancelled, interviews for programs would have to wait. TIME STOPPED.

I am always looking for great quotes, saying, or statements to help reinforce my message and I think it is important to give credit to those who shared their brilliance. Unfortunately, I often come across wise words of wisdom that have been credited to that famous person … “ANONYMOUS.”
