Before I go any further, I should note, there are several books of excuses. There is Garfield's Book of Excellent Excuses, Excuses for Dummies, The Little Book of Big Excuses, The Book of Big Excuses, Complete Excuses Handbook, and my favorite title ... 1,001 Excuses for How to Get Out Of and Away With Anything.
I decided to do a little research on how our thinking changes as we mature. Now, maturity doesn’t necessarily come with age. It should … but it doesn’t. I once read … “Maturity isn’t proportional to age. Some people develop early, some develop late, and some never develop at all.” The definition of maturity is the ability to respond to the environment in an appropriate manner. This response is generally “learned” rather than instinctive. You would hope as you grow older you would grow wiser … but, as Ann Landers once said, “Maturity isn’t a product of growing older, it’s a product of growing wiser.”
Being fair seems, in many cases, difficult for people. Many people are selfish and only want what is best for them. So, how can you reach an agreement of fairness between two parties? One excellent example is in the simple cutting of a pie. The easy way to make sure both parties are happy with the results is to have one person cut the pie and the other person gets to pick which piece they want. Simply Stated: “You cut the pie and I’ll pick the piece.”
If you want to advance your career, be successful in sales, become an effective leader or have more friends and associates willing to help you out when needed, then I suggest you become a student on how to develop strong human relationships. The “Common Sense” I am talking about today will be focused on that one point.
When I was in my early twenties, I had the opportunity to hear Zig Ziglar speak in Atlanta, Georgia to over 20,000 people at the convention center. Many great speakers spoke that day, but the one who impressed me the most was Zig. He shared a story about his best friend, Bernie Lofchick, that I remember like it was yesterday. The story had a profound effect on my life, so I thought I would share it with you.
